Modern Films Productions' first feature film was made by Jim Shum in 1986. Shot in Hong Kong, China and Taiwan, SAND
starred well-known artist and sculptor Antonio Mak who was also actively involved in creating the images and themes of the
radically new work.
SAND premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival Forum section and the Hong
Kong International Film Festival in 1986. It also screened at the Torino film festival, and the Manila Independent Film Festival
in 1987. The film was a puzzle to contemporary audiences who were more used to watching kung fu and gangster action films
from Hong Kong at that time.
SAND disappeared into semi-obscurity but it is now being re-discovered by a
new generation. Twenty years later, the stream-of-consciousness narrative and themes and images of re-birth and transformation
resonate with audiences more used now to the film's modern style.
